Bushi Tour
A carefully curated Japanese martial arts tour which explores both ancient and modern Japanese budo across Tokyo, Gifu and Kyoto.

3 days in and around Tokyo
Meiji Jingu
We’ll start with a pilgrimage to Meiji Jingu so that we can self reflect and pay our respects to the martial spirit.
The Samurai Museum & Sumo
Peruse exhibits of antique armor and weapons at the Samurai Museum in Tokyo.
Then we end the evening off by watching a Sumo wrestling performance and join them in eating hearty Chanko Nabe stew.


Shuriken-jutsu training
Learn to throw bo-shuriken – throwing spikes – by masters from the only surviving shuriken specialist school.
Kukishinden bo-staff training
Experience a lesson in one of the main weapon categories taught in the formidable Kukishinden-ryu school – the rokushaku bo.


Full Kendo training experience
The bulk of this day will be dedicated to a full Kendo experience which will allow practitioners to train in modern Japanese sport fencing.
Rest and recovery
It’s important to rest and recover in-between intense training. We’ll advise you on good spots for sightseeing, dining and relaxing.


Gifu
The pilgrimage continues
Our journey takes us west towards Kyoto via Gifu, using Japan’s famous Shinkansen.
Samurai knife making workshop
Guests will have the opportunity to make their very own Samurai knife at a renowned blacksmith in the Gifu prefecture.


Explore the Sekigahara Battlefield & Museum
Stand on the same soil where ancient warriors clashed and the future of Japan was decided at the culmination of the warring states period.
Kyoto
Visit the Tengu at Kurama temple
As we enter Kyoto, we’ll stop by Kurama-dera to pay our respects to the Tengu – symbols of martial inspiration.


Kyudo training
Experience this unique archery style first hand and see how the fusion of ancient kyūjutsu and Buddhist ritual formed this beautiful practice.
Tameshigiri
Test your skills with a blade by cutting through a tatami mat with a real katana while under expert guidance and supervision.


Visit Musashi Shrine
On our final day, we’ll conduct an excursion into Okayama to visit a shrine dedicated to the greatest duelist: Miyamoto Musashi.
Himeji Castle private night tour
An in-house curator will help us explore the inner workings of Himeji Castle in this private tour and allow us to access areas that are normally off limits to the public.


Possible tour extension: Okinawa!
Karate training
While not part of the core budo tour, we can on request extend our travels to the birthplace of Karate and experience authentic Karate practice in a sub-tropical paradise.
World War II Battlefields
Exploring the museums and historic battlefields from the Pacific theater of WWII is must when visiting Okinawa.
